Raku fired pots


Raku items are purely decorative, and are not suitable for food use.  They are removed from the kiln (a very simple affair constructed from an insulated dustbin with a propane gas burner in the bottom!) whilst red-hot, and plunged into conatiners filled with combustible material (e.g. sawdust, wood-chippings etc).  Here they are allowed to burn and smoulder for some time.  The process of being starved of oxygen causes reduction to take place, resulting in the typical crazed effects and fantastic metallic colours.
